Household electrical equipment: safety classification and applicable standards
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Mains-powered equipment designed or marketed for household, personal or similar use in participating EESS jurisdictions. Solely industrial equipment and extra-low-voltage products require a separate scope assessment.
Requirements
Identify the equipment type and risk level before choosing the technical route. Level 2 and 3 definitions identify the relevant Australian or joint Australian/New Zealand standards; Level 1 follows the equipment-specific hierarchy stated by EESS. The applicable appliance or tool particular standard supplements the general requirements.
Required Evidence
Retain the full report, Australian deviations, model and component schedule, supplier registration and any required product registration or certificate. Check the certification body's recognition and report acceptance for the actual equipment type.
Comparison for the Awards
A valid registration or RCM establishes neither an award nor superior performance. Any claimed margin must use a specific applicable safety or performance criterion and unchanged test conditions.
Version & Transition
Use the edition and amendments accepted at certification and registration, including EESS transition notices; an IEC report alone is not automatically the accepted local route.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
