Food packaging: chemical safety and LONO scope
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Materials used to package food under the specified intended application, including recycled-plastic packaging.
Requirements
Packaging must not transfer a substance harmful to consumers into food. Voluntary Health Canada premarket opinions may support specified applications; a Letter of No Objection is not legal approval and does not remove the food seller’s responsibility. Some special-food submissions include packaging review.
Required Evidence
Full formulation and supplier identity, intended food/contact conditions, migration/toxicological assessment and any application-specific LONO.
Comparison for the Awards
The general safety duty has no single universal numerical margin. A superior migration claim requires a separately identified applicable criterion and comparable test.
Version & Transition
LONO remains tied to the composition and use described in the submission; changes can invalidate reliance on it.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
