Mattresses: cigarette combustion resistance
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Defined resilient-material mattresses; exclusions now expressly include crib/cradle/bassinet mattresses and one-of-a-kind prescription mattresses.
Requirements
The current text references CAN/CGSB-4.2 No.27.7-2023. It limits surface melting/charring beyond 50 mm and continuing combustion ten minutes after cigarette extinction, with the rule’s specimen allowance.
Required Evidence
Mattress construction, prescribed specimen/conditioning records, charring measurements, continuing-combustion observations and test report.
Comparison for the Awards
Compare charring and combustion observations under the same test method; this Canadian cigarette route is not identical to US open-flame testing.
Version & Transition
Justice Canada identifies a 4 June 2026 amendment (SOR/2026-113); use this text rather than a legacy 1970s test reference.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
