Vehicle and component type-approval route
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Motor vehicles and trailers within categories M, N and O and covered systems, components and separate technical units. Two/three-wheel vehicles, agricultural vehicles, bicycles and non-road machinery have different frameworks; a road vehicle component cannot be assigned one universal CE route.
Requirements
Type approval requires the applicable package of safety and environmental acts, technical-service testing and conformity of production. Identify the precise vehicle/component category and applicable EU or UN regulation, amendment series, approval mark and installation restrictions. Electric-vehicle batteries also require assessment under relevant vehicle and battery provisions.
Required Evidence
Provide approval certificates and extensions, technical-service reports, component identity and installation conditions, conformity-of-production evidence and the exact regulatory-act matrix. Verify the authority and designated technical service for the approval task; a general ISO/IEC 17025 certificate alone is insufficient.
Comparison for the Awards
Only compare a specific legal parameter under the same approved configuration and method. An approval mark is baseline evidence, not a ranking; a bicycle or consumer helmet needs its own legal classification instead of inheriting vehicle type approval.
Version & Transition
Use the sector framework and applicable amendment/implementation dates for the vehicle category and production date. The 2018/858 framework is not a complete list of all technical limits.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
