GB · Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, SI 2008/1597
Machinery supply and safety in Great Britain
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Covered machinery, safety components, interchangeable equipment and partly completed machinery. Identify the specific machine and whether it is a finished product, incorporation component or substantial modification; workplace-use obligations remain separate from supply requirements.
Requirements
Assess essential health/safety requirements, foreseeable misuse, guarding, control reliability, stability, noise and maintenance. Use the proper product-specific standard and the chosen recognised CE/UKCA route. Higher-risk listed machinery can require a body-based procedure; partly completed machinery has a distinct incorporation declaration and assembly instructions.
Required Evidence
Provide risk assessment and technical file, safety-function validation, complete tests, drawings, operating instructions and the correct declaration/certificates. Verify the approved/notified body’s precise task if used; a generic voluntary certificate does not replace the legal procedure.
Comparison for the Awards
Only relevant measurable characteristics with an applicable legal reference can support superiority. More motor power or a higher maximum speed can increase hazards and cannot be treated as an automatic quality advantage.
Version & Transition
Use current GB legislation and the recognised CE route conditions. The EU Machinery Regulation’s 20 January 2027 application must be checked for EU/NI or the relevant recognised route; it does not by itself rewrite the GB statutory instrument.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
