Personal protective equipment in Great Britain
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Equipment worn or held to protect against defined health/safety risks. Ordinary garments, fashion eyewear and sports accessories require evidence of the protective purpose before PPE rules are assigned. The actual hazard determines risk category and protection class.
Requirements
Apply the essential health/safety requirements and category I, II or III assessment route. For UKCA, required third-party functions use a competent UK approved body; for recognised CE use the corresponding EU notified-body route. Category III needs its prescribed ongoing production supervision in addition to type examination.
Required Evidence
Provide intended hazards and protection ratings, complete test reports and preconditioning, fit/user instructions, declaration, marking and required certificates. Match body scope, standard edition and product model, including all conditions or limitations.
Comparison for the Awards
Compare the relevant protective characteristic using the same method and class definition. Higher abrasion or impact performance does not establish protection against unrelated chemical or electrical hazards.
Version & Transition
Check the amended GB regulation and designated-standard notice for UKCA; NI continues the EU regulation and its own marking/body arrangements. Do not use a GB approval alone for an EU/NI claim.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
