Restricted substances in electrical equipment: GB and NI
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Covered electrical/electronic equipment, cables and spare parts, with category exclusions and exemptions. Concentrations are assessed at homogeneous-material level. GB exemption decisions and NI’s EU-based exemptions require separate checks.
Requirements
Control the ten restricted substances against the applicable concentration limits: 0.1% for the listed substances other than cadmium, which is 0.01%, subject to lawful exemptions. Material screening does not by itself identify every regulated chemical form; retain the substance-specific test and the exemption’s application and expiry.
Required Evidence
Provide material-level BOM, supplier information, targeted testing, exemption assessment, technical documentation, declaration and correct GB/NI conformity marking. Documentation standards and chemistry test methods perform different functions.
Comparison for the Awards
Compare reliable material-specific results with the legally applicable maximum and retain detection limits. An EU or GB exemption cannot be transferred to the other jurisdiction without verifying its legal status there.
Version & Transition
The official July 2025 guidance supplies separate GB and NI guides. Track the live exemption list and amendments rather than assuming EU revisions automatically amend GB requirements.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
