GB · GB type-approval scheme for M, N, O vehicles and components
GB vehicle type approval and Northern Ireland approvals
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
The GB scheme covers the 2018/858-based M, N and O framework and related systems/components. Different arrangements apply to other vehicle categories. A GB approval is not valid for NI, where EU or UK(NI) approvals must be used.
Requirements
Identify the actual vehicle category, system/component, technical regulation and approval series. Meet safety/environment requirements through the appropriate technical-service testing, approval authority and conformity-of-production route. The full GB or qualifying UKNI approval obligation for M/N vehicle types applies from February 2026 as stated by VCA.
Required Evidence
Provide approval certificates/extensions, technical-service reports, exact part/vehicle and installation identification, regulatory matrix and production-conformity evidence. Verify VCA or the relevant authority and technical-service designation for the actual task.
Comparison for the Awards
Compare a specific regulatory performance parameter under an identical approved configuration. A type-approval number or E-mark is not an award rank, and general CE documentation cannot substitute for required vehicle approval.
Version & Transition
The full scheme’s phased dates and VCA category definitions control. The August 2026 consultation on updated GB approval rules is not itself an enacted change; preserve NI’s separate approval route.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
