AU · Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code: Standard 1.1.1 and Standard 3.2.2 clause 9
Food-contact packaging: intended-use safety
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Packaging materials and articles intended to contact food, assessed for their food type, temperature, duration and reuse conditions. Chapter 3 food-business duties apply in Australia.
Requirements
Packaging must be suitable for its intended use and must not contaminate food. Chemical migration, fragments and hygienic condition are relevant; the former Standard 1.4.3 is not a current standalone Code reference.
Required Evidence
Provide material composition, intended-use limits, manufacturing information and migration or other relevant safety evidence supporting those conditions.
Comparison for the Awards
Food-contact suitability does not prove better insulation, strength or durability. A regulatory comparison must identify the relevant contaminant or safety requirement and method.
Version & Transition
FSANZ's current guidance identifies Standard 3.2.2 clause 9 and the current Code structure, rather than the removed 1.4.3 reference.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
