Consumer chemicals: hazard classification and containers
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Consumer chemical products and relevant containers with regulated toxicity, corrosivity, flammability, quick skin-bonding or pressure hazards; exclusions apply.
Requirements
Classify the actual formulation, then apply the resulting container, leakage, child-resistance, information and prohibition requirements. Not every consumer chemical needs the same child-resistant closure. Workplace-only chemicals follow a different classification/communication route.
Required Evidence
Final formulation/classification, data sources, applicable test reports, container design/closure testing and compliant English/French labels.
Comparison for the Awards
Classification and warning duties do not form a universal “better” scale. A specific safety advantage must have a justified quantitative or functional comparison.
Version & Transition
Consolidated source last amended 4 June 2026; use current referenced test routes rather than an old reference-manual table alone.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
