General service lamps: phased efficacy requirements
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
General service lamps meeting the amended definition; base, voltage, lumen range and exclusions are decisive.
Requirements
NRCan identifies a 45 lm/W minimum for the defined lamps. The new requirements apply from 1 January 2026 for general service incandescent/reflector lamps and 1 January 2027 for other GSLs, with stated early-compliance provisions. Labels include required English/French information.
Required Evidence
Legal lamp classification, manufacturing date, efficacy test/rating, verification, applicable package information and report.
Comparison for the Awards
Compare efficacy with the requirement actually applicable on the manufacturing date. Future requirements cannot be presented as the already applicable 2026 baseline.
Version & Transition
NRCan product guidance modified 20 February 2026; retain the distinct 2026/2027 dates and prior-product routes.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
