Drinking-water products: public supply and building fittings
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Public water-supply products and building water fittings have different approval and installation questions. Regulation 31 concerns water-company use; domestic taps and fittings require assessment under the relevant water-fittings regime, with Scotland, Wales and NI legal differences considered.
Requirements
Identify the actual water-contact use, material, contact area and applicable approval conditions. Regulation 31 approval can require designated-laboratory testing and product-specific instructions for use. Water-fittings obligations address waste, misuse, contamination and suitability; commercial product certification can support evidence but is not identical to government Regulation 31 approval.
Required Evidence
Provide all wetted materials, full hygiene tests, conditions and intended installation, exact approval/listing and current status where required. Verify DWI-designated laboratories and the approved-product list, not a general laboratory’s logo. DWI states its published approved list can be used across the UK within each product’s conditions.
Comparison for the Awards
Compare only an applicable migration, contamination or other legal parameter within the accepted route. A voluntary water-efficiency rating or a commercial certificate cannot be relabelled as government confirmation of superior drinking-water safety.
Version & Transition
Use the actual destination and installed-use requirements and the current product approval conditions. Approval is product/use-specific; an EU drinking-water materials transition does not automatically grant UK approval.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
