Clothing storage units: stability and tip-over safety
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Freestanding clothing storage furniture meeting the rule’s height, mass and enclosed-volume thresholds; includes qualifying fabric dressers.
Requirements
The rule covers three stability tests, interlock operation, anti-tip restraints and warnings. Scope criteria include at least 27 inches height, 30 pounds mass and 3.2 cubic feet enclosed storage. Built-in units and furniture outside the defined use are not automatically included.
Required Evidence
Measured dimensions/mass/volume, final-configuration test reports, restraint and interlock records, labels and GCC/CPC.
Comparison for the Awards
Higher stability claims need a defined extra load or resistance margin under comparable configurations, not simply an included wall anchor.
Version & Transition
Applies to in-scope units manufactured after 1 September 2023. Check CPSC’s limited warning-text enforcement policy separately.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
