Radio equipment: safety, spectrum and EMC
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Products intentionally emitting or receiving radio waves for communication or radiodetermination, including connected locks, cameras, routers, toys and wearables. A pre-certified radio module does not alone establish conformity of the finished product and antennas.
Requirements
Assess Article 3 safety and health, EMC and efficient use of spectrum. Match frequency band, bandwidth, power, antenna gain, duty cycle and intended Member State. Other obligations, including common-charger or cybersecurity provisions, are triggered by defined product scope rather than all radio products.
Required Evidence
Provide final-product RF, EMC, safety and RF-exposure reports; software versions, antenna lists, restrictions, EU declaration and instructions. For Article 3(2)/(3) requirements, assess whether fully applied cited standards permit internal control; otherwise use the required notified-body procedure and verify its NANDO scope.
Comparison for the Awards
Spectrum efficiency and exposure are assessed by the applicable method. Greater transmit power is not higher quality where a maximum limit applies; compliance in one band does not establish conformity in another.
Version & Transition
Applies from 13 June 2016, with the original transition ending 13 June 2017. Verify current RED standard citations and additional delegated requirements separately.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
