Children’s products: accessible lead content
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Children’s footwear, bags, clothing and other products primarily intended for children 12 or younger, subject to statutory exceptions.
Requirements
Accessible components generally must contain no more than 100 ppm total lead. Surface-coating lead is a separate requirement. Material testing exemptions do not exempt the finished product from the lead limit; certain bicycle metals and electronics have specific exceptions.
Required Evidence
Component/material list, accessibility assessment, test or valid exemption basis, CPC and model/lot linkage.
Comparison for the Awards
Compare lower measured lead with the applicable limit, including detection limits and component-specific exceptions; do not convert “not detected” into zero.
Version & Transition
Federal children’s product requirement; it does not establish a universal adult-footwear or luggage standard.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
