Machinery: point-of-operation and moving-part guards
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Machinery used in OSHA-covered workplaces; specific machine standards can add further obligations.
Requirements
Provide guarding against operation points, nip points, rotating parts, chips and sparks. Guards must be secured and must not create hazards. Fixed machines require anchoring where specified. Employer installation and use obligations cannot be discharged solely by a supplier’s certificate.
Required Evidence
Machine risk/guarding assessment, drawings, interlock validation where used, access tests, installation and operating instructions.
Comparison for the Awards
This rule includes functional duties rather than one universal numeric rating. Any superior claim needs a defined, machine-specific verified criterion.
Version & Transition
OSHA federal general-industry provision; state-plan and industry-specific requirements must be checked for the actual workplace.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
