Mattresses: smouldering and open-flame performance
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Defined mattresses, mattress pads and mattress sets; the two parts have different product scopes.
Requirements
Part 1632 addresses cigarette-initiated smouldering. Part 1633 evaluates mattress-set fire growth during an open-flame test. The actual construction and foundation combination matter; pillows, sleeping bags and unupholstered air mattresses are not automatically covered.
Required Evidence
Construction specification, prototype/qualification records, full heat-release and smouldering data, production controls and required labels.
Comparison for the Awards
Compare heat-release or charring margins only against the applicable part, method and specimen construction; “flame retardant” is not a quantitative result.
Version & Transition
Use current product definitions and prototype/substitution provisions; one component’s fabric certificate does not cover the mattress set.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
