US · 40 CFR Part 770; TSCA Title VI
Composite wood: formaldehyde emissions
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Regulated hardwood plywood, particleboard, MDF, thin MDF and relevant laminated products or finished goods containing them.
Requirements
Emission ceilings depend on panel type: hardwood plywood 0.05 ppm, particleboard 0.09 ppm, MDF 0.11 ppm and thin MDF 0.13 ppm. Panel certification and ongoing testing, labelling and supply-chain records are part of the rule. Exemptions have specific conditions.
Required Evidence
EPA-recognised third-party certifier identity, panel type, chamber method, production lot, certification and finished-good panel linkage.
Comparison for the Awards
Lower emissions must be compared using the same accepted method and panel class. A whole-room or whole-furniture VOC result cannot replace the regulated panel result.
Version & Transition
Current Part 770 controls. Proposed amendments shown on EPA pages are not treated as effective requirements.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
