Great Britain and Northern Ireland: product rules and marking
Identify the market and product category first. Each dossier separates legal duties, referenced standards, evidence and the comparison needed for an award.
Product Scope
Great Britain means England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland is a separate product-regulatory jurisdiction. For a consumer product, first identify sector legislation and residual general-safety duties. UKCA, CE and UKNI are different routes, not alternative designs for the same award badge.
Requirements
GB continues recognition of CE for specified sectors under the 2024 arrangements, while sectors such as construction and vehicles have their own rules. GB general consumer safety remains governed by the 2005 Regulations. In NI, EU GPSR applies from 13 December 2024 and the relevant EU sector rules continue. When a mandatory third-party procedure uses a UK body for the NI route, CE with UKNI can be required; it does not allow EEA placement.
Required Evidence
Provide a GB/NI and sector applicability matrix, risk assessment, appropriate full test reports, technical documentation, model traceability, instructions and required declarations/marking. For UKCA use designated-standard notices and UK approved-body scope when required; for CE use the corresponding EU route and current harmonised references.
Comparison for the Awards
A permitted conformity mark proves a compliance route, not higher quality. Award comparisons require a specific technical requirement accepted for the destination and a repeatable same-condition comparison. Registration, language and document obligations are baseline checks.
Version & Transition
CE recognition is sector-specific, not a universal removal of UK obligations. The sector table and April 2026 NI guidance were checked on 19 October 2026; preserve the distinction throughout applications, records and checklists.
Official Sources
Applicability depends on the product classification, intended use, configuration and actual sales territory. Manufacturing, placing-on-the-market and testing dates, together with transition provisions, are checked as required by each applicable rule. The directory identifies sources; it does not replace assessment of the specific model. Standards are identified by reference, and their authoritative texts remain with the issuing bodies. Official source documents retain their original language.
